Eric Arledge (V-8 Modifieds), Chillicothe, Kevin Spencer (Mod Lites), Hillsboro and Rodney Rittenhouse (4 Cylinder Stock), Jeffersonville toped the feature events in their respective divisions Saturday night at 35 Raceway Park. Other feature winners were Chris Smalley (Mini Sprints), Brandon Furniss (Mini Late Models), Evan Smith (Junior Karts), Kevin Wills (Senior Karts) and Roger Owens (Super Heavy Karts).
Seventy-something Bud Frazier, who has been wheeling race cars for 52 years, jumped to the early lead at the start of the first-ever 20-lap Modified feature eventually opening up a full straightaway lead over Eric Arledge and Darrel Bowe. When Arledge spun in turn #2 on lap nine, it erased all that the one-time owner of the Tecumseh Inn had built up. Earlier in the evening Frazier suffered motor problems related to the rocker arms but was able to secure enough repairs to make the bell for the night’s money race. With five laps to in the Feature the right rear tire on Frazier’s #9F went flat handing the win to Arledge in the #65. The Heat race went to four year driving veteran Arledge who is driving the same car wheeled to the 2010 K-C Raceway Championship by Brian Whiteman. Anthony “Peanut” Helms took the initial lead of the 20 lap Mod Lite feature holding a tenuous lead until lap 4 when Kevin Spencer began putting pressure on the 14-year-old from New Holland. At the same time a turn #2 spin by Tyler Boetcher and his co-worker at Outlaw Chassis James Halfhill brought out the first yellow of the race. On the restart Spencer (#3K) took the lead for good but was pestered by Helms for a few laps until spinning in turn #2 on lap eight. At the checkered it was Spencer, Todd Dunkle (driving the #53 in relief of Toby Boetcher), James Halfhill, point leader Doug Morris and Tyler Boetcher. Heats went to Morris and Spencer. Former Dwarf driver Rodney Rittenhouse earned his first win of season in the 4 Cylinder Stock division besting father and son Robert and Adam Haynes in the 20 lap grind. Rittenhouse, whose kin race in several of the track’s other divisions, drove the family owned 1986 Nissan to its seventh win and by his own admission, his 30th career victory. It was not an easy win as the 44-year-old was hounded throughout the race by JR Lemaster and Adam Haynes. After taking the initial lead, Rittenhouse was shuffled to third by lap five with Lemaster in front followed by Adam Haynes. On lap 16 the front suspension of Caleb McKinney #11M collapsed bringing out the yellow. On the restart it was LeMaster, Adam Haynes and Rittenhouse, but coming down for the white flag two laps later the air cleaner of LeMaster’s ride came off bringing out the yellow once again and moving the Washington Court House driver to the tail. For the final two laps it was Rittenhouse, Adam Haynes and Robert Haynes side-by-side, three wide. At the stripe Rittenhouse held a .04 second lead over the second and third place finishers. LeMaster and Adam Haynes took the two heats earlier. Brandon Furniss copped his fifth win in eight starts so far this season when he took top honors in the Mini Late Model feature Saturday night. When the green dropped for the initial start of the 20-lap feature Scott Henry, who shares driving duty with Chip Mack, jumped into the lead only to lose it two laps later when he, Tom McVey and Furniss tangled on the frontstretch. Henry stopped but the other two drivers kept going which moved him to the tail on the restart. By lap five, Furniss was in the lead with “Captain” John Smith in second. After the #24M of McVey stopped on the frontstretch two laps later, the running order was Furniss, Smith and Steve Cruse - the winner at Jackson County Speedway Friday night. McVey was unable to restart. With Furniss checking out for the remaining 13 laps, the real race was between Cruse, Smith, and Henry with Cruse securing the runner-up slot with five to go. The top five finishers: Furniss (point leader), Cruse, Henry, Smith and Josh Atwood. Heat wins were by Smith and Furniss. Chris Smalley won his second feature in as many weeks taking honors in the only feature that went non-stop Saturday night. Point leader Jake Hesson took the initial lead and held for it for the first seventeen laps until feeling the pressure of Smalley but it was not until the white flag lap signaling one to go that second generation driver Smalley could make the pass stick. At the end it was Smalley, who won the heat race earlier, Hesson and Chad Hyatt. Cassie Ervin, gunning for her fourth Junior Kart feature this season, came up short after leading to the half-way point, when she was overtaken by Evan Smith when the yellow flag was displayed for Josh Worley who spun exiting turn #4. On the restart Smith slipped past Ervin earning his fifth win of the season. The initial top five finishers were Smith, Ervin, Blake Vest, Reece Bloomfield and Tanner Troute – however, during the post-race inspection Ervin was disqualified which dropped her to second in the point standings. In the Heavy Kart feature, Point leader Roger Owens earned his fifth win in eight starts as the race was checkered at the four lap point due to a lack of competitors: David Matson lost his chain on lap two and Owen’s son Robbie Cooke lost a tire on lap four. Matson took the heat race. Kevin Wills took the checker in the Senior Kart feature earning his third win in six starts. The 28-year-old driver from Chillicothe took the lead for first half lap before dropping to third. After a re-start on lap four, John Hart and Wills dueled for the next six laps until he was able to clinch the lead with two laps to go. The top Senior Kart finishers were: Will, Hart, Doug Morris, Aaron Dunham and Justin Rittenhouse. Heat winners were Wills, Hart, and Dunham with Jeff DuBois taking the B Main. Next week the non-Winged Sprints return for their second appearance of the season. When they made their first-ever showing back on June 2nd, Kirk Jeffries picked up the inaugural 20-lap feature win followed by Lewie Christian, Aaron Fry, Bob Tucker and Aaron Strauser. In addition to a full racing program next week’s events will feature a pickup truck tug-o-war sponsored by Greenlawn Homes. Gates open at 3:30 with racing at 7:00.
