Steel Block Late Models added to the program tonight and provided a thriller finish. Kyle Thomas pulled out to an early lead and looked to have a win in his sights when he started lapping the back of the field. Chris Carpenter had been slowly reeling the leader in and caught Thomas with 2 laps remaining. Thomas appeared to have made a winning move spltting back markers on the way to the white flag, but the leaders again approached lappers going into turn 3 the final time. Thomas chose to go high, but the lane was blocked and Carpenter squeezed into an opening on the bottom to lead the last quarter lap of a very exciting and nearly caution free feature. I believe Kevin Smith was third, but the race up front distracted everyone's attention.
20 SBLM cars. AMRA mod feature saw Jason Brookover become the season's first repeat winner, but not without a strong challenge from Kenny Johnson. The lead duo ran nose to tail and side by side as Johnson grabbed the lead near the races mid-point only to see Brookover fight his way back around on the high line. Johnson got up to Brookovers door the final circuit but could get no closer as Brookover won by a car length. Doug Henry was third. Bird Wilson came off the tail to finish in the top 5. 17 AMRA Mods. Chad Smith and Travis Thomas swapped the lead multiple times in the TSMA Hot Mod main. The top 5 cars pretty much ran under a blanket the entire race and had several position changes in spots 3 - 10. Thomas pressured Smith the final 5 circuits, but Smith held on to win his first feature ever, and became the 6th different Hot Mod feature winner @ Leg. Hilltop. Thomas finished on Smith's bumper and Mike Conkle worked past Levi Flesher late to get third. Thomas's 2nd place finish clinches the TSMA Hot Mod point title. 20 TSMA Hot Mods Small fields again in the Pure Stock and 4 cylinder classes, but both put on good feature races. Bill Fordyce held off Matt Holcomb in a close battle in the PS main, and Tom Adkins turned back a late charge form Josh Salyers in the 4 cylinder feature. The complete show was finished by 11:30 and was probably one of the best nights of competitive racing and close finishes that I've seen in a long time. Every race came down to the last turn and track was tacky and smooth. Darn good crowd as well. |
