Jefferies tops NW Inaugural; Ervin, Furniss, Boetcher Repeat Westerville’s Kirk Jefferies took the 20-lap feature debut of the non-Winged Sprints at 35 Raceway Park on a cool full-moon evening this past Saturday. In the Junior Kart Division it was Cassie Ervin with her third win of the season as it was for Brandon Furniss in the Mini Late Models and Toby Boetcher in the Modified Lites. Other winners were JR Lemaster (4 Cylinder Stock) Jake Hesson (Mini Sprint) and Jack Morris (Senior Kart). The 12 lap Heavy Kart feature was postponed to this Saturday evening because of the track’s curfew. Jefferies, the track’s 2001 Mini Stock Champion, started the 20 lap feature from the fifth spot (inside row three) and had worked himself the lead position within the first couple of laps as the traditional Sprints took to the clay for the first time ever at 35 Raceway. The 40-year racing veteran won the heat race earlier, also from the tail. Following Jefferies in the feature was former Mini Sprint driver Louie Christian, Aaron Fry, Bob Tucker and Aaron Strauser. Brandon Furniss, 28, from Orient copped his third feature win of the season in the Mini Late Model Division after starting from the seventh position in the 20 lap grind. The first yellow flag of the race flew on lap three when the #00 of Joey Johnson lost his driveshaft on the front stretch; two laps later the spinning #95 of Scott Henry brought it out for the second time. Henry is back in the seat of the #95 that he owns but which was wheeled by Chip Mack early in the year until his recent release. The top five at the stripe was Furniss, Vonley Jordon III, Zack Ackley, Henry and Jerry Florence Jr. JR Lemaster brought his 1986 Nissan home for his first win of the season in the 4 Cylinder Stock Division. The Washington Court House driver, whose son Tanner competes in the Junior Kart Division, started outside of the forth row for the 20 lap feature. Second through fourth were Aaron Nauman, Mark Clifford, Rodney Rittenhouse and Adam Haynes. The #72 owned by Shawn Lewis saw double duty this week as it was run in the 4 Cylinder Division by Lewis and then Josh Attwood in the Mini Late Model Division after his 777 developed mechanical problems. The 1989 Nissan 240 SX was driven by Attwood last season. For second generation driver Cassie Ervine, who had her motor claimed following the feature, this win was her third win in the four races run so far this season. Last year the Madison Plains High School (London) student ran two divisions copping three Open Division features and five Junior Division features and is the track’s reigning Open Division champion. The top five finishers in this past Saturday night’s twelve lap feature were: Ervin, Evan Smith, Blake Vest, Reece Bloomfield and Josh Corley. Toby Boetcher earned his third win of the season ahead of Todd Dunkle with Jeff Surber, Dylan Rittenhouse with Botcher’s son Tyler rounding out the top five. Despite this being his third win, the Columbus driver sits sixth in the standings 286 points behind leader Surber. Senior Kart feature winner Jack Morris, Washington Court House, earned his first win of the 2012 season after starting fourth in the 21 Kart field. John Hart, Jerrod Bloomfield, Jeff DuBois and Kevin Wills finished second thru fifth respectively. Aaron Dunham, originally finishing second, was disqualified following tech inspection for the second time this season. Correction to the results from May 26, 2012: It was inadvertently written that Robbie Cook had won the Heavy Kart feature. This was in error as Roger Owens from Circleville was the winner. We apologize for any issues associated with this oversight. This Saturday is Pepsi Employee night with gates opening at 3:30 and racing at 7:00.
