A full house and full pits merged for an outstanding night of racing action this weekend for the 11th program of the season at the Ohio Valley Speedway. The Ohio Valley Sprint Car Association made its third appearance of the season; this was coupled with the annual Picture & Autograph night, an event that both fans and drivers enjoy and appreciate. A total of 107 race teams were on hand.

A full field of 19 OVSCA sprints ventured to Wood Co. after racing the night before at Southern Ohio Speedway. Wayne McPeek, Greg Mitchell, and Andre Layfield won the heats, setting the field for the 25-lap feature. Mc Peek led the first three laps followed by Mitchell, Layfield—who was driving the Billy-Jarrell-owned #84—and Kory Crabtree. Following a caution for Dave Dickson’s spin, Layfield took the lead and gradually extended it throughout the remainder of the event, eventually winning by nearly a straightaway over Mitchell, McPeek, Nathan Skaggs (from 14th), and Kody Kinser. Jason Dolick’s “semi-flip” was the only serious incident; his car landed on its side on lap 10...the track crew righted the car, and Dolick was able to continue but could not finish the event, eventually winding up 15th.

An even fuller-field of 23 late models helped fill the pits, with three heats and a B-main necessary to trim the starting field to 18. Chris Carpenter, Larry Bond, and Jason Montgomery claimed the competitive heats, and Jim Quaigg the consi. Carpenter and Bond drew the front-row starting spots. Bond took off in the lead, holding it through several early caution periods, with Carpenter, Freddie Carpenter, and Rod Evans close behind. Montgomery suffered a flat tire on the initial start; track procedure enabled him to pit, change the tire and return to the track, starting from the tail. Evans also suffered a flat, forcing him out just before half-way. Carpenter eventually made his move on Bond, taking the lead on lap 17. Bond eventually faded to a 5th-place finish, as Montgomery—from the tail—Andy Bond, and Jeff Burdette (from 12th) all got by. Ed Shuman was caught up in a mid-race caution and was towed off—it was his first DNF of the season.

Roy Roush led the entire 20-lap distance in the Malta Windows AMRA main; Jason Brookover was with 2 car-lengths for the duration, but could not mount a serious challenge. For Roush, it was his 3rd mod win of the season; he’s now the class leader. Jeremy Berwanger made his way from 12th to finsh 3rd; Andy Bond was 4th and Jeremy Blake 5th. Tom Sigler was in the top 5-mix early on, but was the second driver to drop out. Tyler Evans won his first AMRA mod heat and wound up with a 9th place finish. Brookover and Blake won the other heats, and Nick Corbitt won the consi.

Nick Ley drew the inside pole starting spot for the 12-lap Pure Stock main, but spun in front of the field in turn 2 on the start; fortunately all drivers involved were able to continue. Brandon Davis, from the outside pole, led the first six laps before tire problems forced him out, leaving Toad Forcyce on the point. Fordyce led the last 6 laps; following Fordyce at the finish were Ted Lescody (with his best-ever finish), Robbie McCullough, Bill Fordyce, and Rick Van Dyne. Ley and Lescody won the heats, another first for Lescody.

After three weeks of mechanical problems, Tom Adkins returned to the FWD 4-cylinder winner’s circle with a non-stop green-to-checker run. For Adkins, it was his 5th win of the year, but first since June 16. Point leader Denzil Barker Jr, was nearly a straight-away behind after the 12 laps; Josh Salyer was 3rd, Jeff Rankin 4th, and Kim Santee 5th. Chris Lauer and Adkins won the prelims.

After Ryan Bigley’s early exit, and Cole Mayle’s spin on lap 10, last week’s Mike’s Auto Body WRA Mini-Wedge winner Nathan Drake found himself in the lead. Drake was able to hold off Mayle’s desperate charge for the win; Mayle finished second ahead of Coleman Evans. Bigley and Mayle won the two heats. {Sorry but again I overlooked picking up the full feature finish}

The Valley will be closed on August 18th, and the OVSCA sprints will return on August 25. A regular racing program is scheduled for Saturday September 1; fans and drivers are reminded that beginning that night, activities are scheduled to get underway one hour earlier—hot laps will begin at 545 with racing at 630.
